NEW YORK (September 6, 2022) — TopResume, the world's largest resume-writing service, today revealed what's most important to today's career-driven professionals, especially amid a looming recession. Besides affordable health insurance and work-from-home flexibility, rounding out their top-three priorities is a four-day week.
Between July 17 and August 18, 2022, TopResume surveyed 1,487 U.S. career-driven professionals to find out if Americans would be as interested in working a four-day week at full pay as those in the UK, currently the world's largest trial of a four-day week. To better understand how they ranked 10 different criteria, the survey stated, “When evaluating job opportunities, select the three benefits that matter most to you.” Below are the results:
-
Affordable health insurance (52% )
-
Work-from-home options (hybrid or full-time remote) (41% )
-
Four-day work week (at full pay) (36%)
-
Career- or personal-development training (31%)
-
Mental-health services (8%)
-
Tuition reimbursement (8%)
-
Childcare reimbursement or on-site facility (5%)
-
Free weekday lunches or lunch stipend (4%)
-
Gym membership reimbursement (4%)
-
Family planning services (2%)
“Unsurprisingly, the pandemic has created an unprecedented level of workplace flexibility to which today's professionals have not only grown accustomed, but now require for job satisfaction and overall wellness,” said Amanda Augustine, TopResume's career expert, who is also a certified professional career coach. “Regardless if your employer has since insisted on a full-time office, full-time remote, or hybrid arrangement, the four-day week movement has recently spiked in popularity — a win-win for both employees and employers, as it fosters a better work-life balance, increased productivity, and heightened gender equality, especially for working parents.”
However, in order to determine the importance of having a four-day week at full pay, TopResume then asked, “What would you be willing to pass up or sacrifice? Check all that apply.” Below are those results:
-
Additional Paid Time Off (35%)
-
Promotion (21%)
-
Salary Increase (19%)
-
None of the Above (46%)
TopResume's survey revealed more than half (54%) would give up or decline a benefit in order to work a four-day week at full pay. One in five professionals would give up a promotion or raise for a four-day week at full pay. More than one-third would give up additional PTO to work a four-day week at full pay. In summary, more than half of the respondents would sacrifice more vacation time, a title change, or a raise, for the luxury of working a four-day week for their full salary.
